How to spend wisely

How to spend wisely

Today's youth have higher disposable incomes as compared to their counterparts in earlier generations. The same has resulted in a significant change in lifestyles.
Objects that were considered luxury goods say a decade ago have become necessities for the present generation. In fact, the young population has been a major contributor to the India growth story. It is widely believed that spending habits of the youth will play a major role in vitalising the economic cycle, going forward.
However, there is a need to understand that spending in an unrestrained and haphazard manner could spell disaster for your finances. Spending should be done with a degree of discipline and planning. We present four tips which will help you master the art of spending.
Spend in line with a budget
Remember the longstanding method of making a budget and then spending in line with the same. That is still the right way to go about spending. Having a clearly laid-out budget will help you prioritise your spending. For example, the highest priority must be accorded to investments that have to be made in line with investment plans and commitments like life insurance premiums. Only when the high priority needs have been taken care of, should the balance funds be used for other expenses. Although the idea of abiding by a budget for spending may seem "uncool", it is nonetheless, the right thing to do.
Track expenses
Again, tracking where you have spent your money may not qualify as an interesting way to spend time, but it is important nonetheless. It will provide you an unambiguous picture of your cash flows; this will put you in better control of your finances. More importantly, it will provide you an insight into your spending habits. This in turn can help you understand the areas that account for a significant portion of your expenses and give you the opportunity to do a reality check on their utility.

Don't succumb to impulse spending
It is now considered trendy to hangout at malls, coffee shops and lounges. And window displays and latest blockbusters are known to test the resolve of even the strongest. A young individual with access to disposable funds can be rather vulnerable in such a situation. Resist the temptations and don't succumb to impulse spending. This is especially pertinent if the spending will come at the cost of your monthly investment towards your retirement/home building corpus. Always try to spend in line with your budget.
For example, while it's good to take your friends to the movies or for a dinner once in a while, we recommend that it not be overdone. Movies/dinners can be very expensive propositions these days, which means that you stand to gain significantly if you cut down these outings even by say 20%.
For example, even if Rs 1,000 were to be saved on these outings and invested in a diversified equity fund over 20 years as a one-time investment, it would mature into Rs 16,366 (assuming 15% compounded growth).
Beware of credit cards
Easy availability of credit cards has provided a major boost to spending. A credit card gives you access to high spending limits; also it liberates you of the worry about handling cash. But credit cards have their downsides as well. For example, making the "minimum payment due" could get you entangled in a debt trap and force you to make interest payments at obscenely high rates. In fact, credit cards are so pervasive in the present day context that we have chosen to dedicate an article to the same in this guide.

5 Creative Ways To Pursue Your Passion

Kajal Agarwal
5 Creative Ways To Pursue Your Passion
"Conditions for creativity are to be puzzled; to concentrate;
to accept conflict and tension; to be born everyday;
to feel a sense of self."
Erich Fromm

Pursuing your passion can draw the best of your creativity from you. Being creative lends greater meaning to your life. Others will benefit from your creativity.

Sir Ken Robinson gives here an inspiring and entertaining TED talk about creativity in education. His website is one of the most fun I have ever visited.
"Creativity is a type of learning process where the teacher and pupil
are located in the same individual."
Arthur Koestler

In response to my post last week 3 Tips To Awaken Your Life's Passion I received the following:

"I am pursuing my passion and have run into lots of hardships. However I am determined and often times I find myself visualizing success before it has happened just as you described in the article. If possible-- since I am dealing with this right now - write something on recovering from setbacks and dealing with adversity when you have decided not to give up no matter what. I know that may sound kind of off the wall, but I find myself trying to secure little wins to keep going. and love to hear and read about how others overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles."

Here are 5 ways to recover from setbacks and deal with adversity. You have probably heard many times the story about Edison inventing the light bulb. History relates that it took over 1,000 (some say more) attempts at light bulb before he achieved his goal. How did he keep going? Thankfully, he did.

1. Bless The Block

Accept the setback. Do not let yourself be cast down by it. It may be just what you need to take a vital next step in a direction you would not otherwise have taken. Look for the good in whatever does not seem to be going your way. Adversity can prove to be a blessing in disguise, if you choose to see it that way.

These two sayings help me keep a winning frame of mind:

Every knock's a boost and

Everything that comes to me is for me.

2. Re-energize Yourself

Do not be tempted to let your energy drop so that you become despondent. Stand up tall. Take a few deep breathes to connect you with your spirit. Smile. Have a break and do something different - give yourself a treat. Speak kind words of encouragement to yourself, as a loving parent would to their adored child. Play at something, just for the fun of it.

Drink plenty of water. It helps to clear negative emotion. Go for a brisk gratitude walk, recalling all the things you now appreciate in your life, especially the "small" things you often take for granted. Swim, even jump up and down on the spot. It may seem silly - and make you laugh. Laughter is great for getting things back in perspective.

3. Refocus On Your Passion

Connect with what your passion means for you. Feel it, see it, hear it. Immerse yourself in the beauty and magnificence of your purpose. Set aside considerations and touch into your heart, the source of your vision. Do you have images around you that help you to hold your purpose? Do you have a photo of yourself central to the images?

Remind yourself: What is calling you to express your passion? How is it a valuable contribution - to yourself, to others? Why is this vision important to you?

4. Get Support

Few great objectives have been achieved in isolation, as anyone who has watched an Oscar night will verify. Ask others for help when you need it. Be open and willing to receive assistance when it is offered to you. You may gather a team around you who enjoy participating and contributing to your efforts.

Find one or more "witnesses". A good witness is primarily a listener who shares a positive focus with you. I have several wonderful witnesses, dear friends who listen with great empathy, both when I meet a setback, but also when I have a win. It is so good to share your wins! It seems to make them bigger somehow - and that keeps me going.

5. Access Your Spirit

Saying "Help" can be the most profound prayer. Many times, I have found amazing things happening having called for help from my depths. Your creative centre is the source of what I call divine guidance. Prayer I have found to be a way of making the connection between my earthly, child-like nature and my higher spiritual self. Well chosen affirmations are a form of prayer that condition you and help move you in the direction of your passion.

Forgive yourself for the mistakes you think you have made. They may turn out to be not so wrong. I know that the spirit you are is magnificent beyond understanding. I hope that you may come to realize something of this for yourself. Begin by loving yourself, just as you are.

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly."
Buckminster Fuller

Have you ever overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles in pursuing your purpose and passion? I would love to hear about them. As the writer above suggested, sharing our stories can give great hope and encouragement to others.

Sound Sleeping Helps You Mix Custom Sleep Tracks
If you're looking for soothing tracks to help your sleep or fill your work space, Sound Sleeping offers you the ability to mix your own custom track.

We introduced you to Sound Sleeping back in 2006. Since then they've revamped their sound mixer to include some additional source sounds and abilities.

You can mix five different sounds including outdoor sounds like rain, ocean surf, and crickets chirping, as well as man-made sounds like drums and bonfires. Each source sound can be panned left and right and adjusted in volume. With some careful sound selection, you can make some interesting effects. The screenshot above shows the positioning for a loop that recreates the effect of sitting on a beach with ocean to one side and a drum session/bonfire to the other.

If you're more interested in relaxing and less interested in fiddling with the tuner, there are quite a few premixed tracks available for download at reasonable prices.

Know of a great place online to find soothing sounds? Share the nerve-calming wealth in the comments. Thanks Rick!

Secrets of great sex at all ages

Secrets of great sex at all ages
LOVED crazy positions in your twenties, tried dress-up in your thirties and joined the mile-high club in your forties?

Then you are not alone.

On our sexual journeys, the majority of us will try out different turn-ons in the quest for a perfect sex life through the ages.

And, according to sexpert Tracey Cox, our beside manner trends are pretty standard all over the country.

Here, we look at her findings on sex at different stages of our lives, taken from the bestselling book, Sextasy.
In your twenties

He can’t stop thinking about sex

Eighty-five per cent of 20- to 30-year-old men think about sex every couple of hours.

She’s had same-sex fantasies or been bi-curious

Imagining what it would be like to make love to another woman is nearly always one of the top three female fantasies.

Statistically only 4 per cent of women tick the ‘had a lesbian experience’ box in surveys but in my experience, it’s way, way higher than that.

There’s plenty of incentive: A 2006 study of nearly 2000 people discovered that 76 per cent of women who slept with women reached orgasm (for women with men, you are pushing it at 50 per cent).

Lesbians are also the least promiscuous group and consistently report the highest sexual satisfaction.

Almost everyone’s tried ‘The Wheelbarrow’

This is the age and stage where most of us experiment with positions – the more athletic and bonkers – the better!

About one in 10 people have had a threesome And most of you did it in your early twenties.

Threesomes and moresomes aren’t quite as common as you think.

The majority of people who’ve had them try them once or twice, then go back to one-on-one sex.

The less you know the people involved, the more likely you are to see it as a positive experience. It’s also likely that you’ll visit a strip club or lapdancing club – with your friends but increasingly often with your partner – at some point in your 20s.
In your thirties

Almost all of you have had sex outside

A throwback from our teens – when we did most of our sexual experimentation behind the bike shed, in the bushes, or in the back of a car – most of us will have sex somewhere semi-public in our thirties.

Under the cover of darkness in a park, on a beach, or in your own garden are the top choices.

Sex in the shower and sex in a hot tub is also popular.

Some of you will try bondage, blindfolds and spanking

Around 20 per cent of thirty-year-olds spice up their sex life with this kind of thing in your thirties

Either you or your partner have had your hands tied together to a chair or four-poster bed on a dirty weekend away.

Lots will continue to enjoy tying each other up but only 5 to 10 per cent of the population will go on to more serious S&M.

She’ll have several gay male friends

Straight women love gay men; gay men love straight women. Why? Well, we’re more alike than you think!

Swedish research is confirming just why the two groups get along so famously – we both have symmetrical brains.

Straight men and lesbians have asymmetrical brain hemispheres.

This is more evidence that sexual orientation is not a choice – it may be attributed in part to neurobiology.

You’ll have kids – and kiss your sex life goodbye

Or will you? Some stats shows that it’s not actually that bad.

During pregnancy, couples have sex four to five times a month.

Most stop for seven weeks after the birth but four months later are back to four or five times a month.

Breastfeeding doesn’t seem to affect this either. Six months after the birth, the average couple then have sex three to five times a month.

These are the official stats, but they don’t correlate with my experience.

Judging by the hundreds of letter I receive on the topic, these stats don’t reflect real life.
My personal estimate would be that most couples have sex once a month while their kids are really young and sex doesn’t really return to normal for another two years.

The trick in getting through? Don’t pretend it’s not happening, instead reassure each other it’s a temporary glitch, keep touching and cuddling and when you do have sex, have quickies.

Her orgasm quote rises

Ninety per cent of women past 30 regularly experience orgasm, compared to just 23 per cent of younger women.

Most of this will be achieved through masturbation and oral sex.

One survey found that married women found oral sex the most enjoyable way to orgasm.

In the 1930s only 44 per cent of women ever enjoyed oral sex. Today, the number of women in their thirties enjoying oral sex is 87 per cent (the remaining 13 per cent are standing on a cliff ready to jump).
In your forties

More than half of men will have had problems getting an erection

Up to 52 per cent of men between the age of 40 and 70 will find their penises suddenly have a mind of their own.

Almost half of you will have been unfaithful

The official stats range between 22 and 42 per cent but I’m leaning towards the higher end of the figure.

Even people who rated themselves ‘pretty happy’ in their marriage cheat.

They’re twice as likely to have an affair as those who rated themselves as ‘very happy’.

Only 25 per cent of men in another study said they’d had ‘lots of marital problems’ before an affair compared to 48 per cent of women.

So how happy is happy enough to ward off extra-marital temptation?

The problem here is we’re pursuing ‘ultra-happiness’, expecting our lives to be ridiculously romantic and sex-fuelled.

The things that make us unfaithful? You’re high risk if you’ve been together a long time, have had a high number of partners before marriage, you’re male, live in the city and think about sex everyday.

You’re most likely to have unsafe sex.

STIs have doubled in under a decade in people over 45 and are rising faster than teenagers.

Whatever your age, you should be aware that STIs and unwanted pregnancies aren’t only a risk to youngsters.

You’re having less sex than ever

But the good news is, it’s better quality.
Eighteen to 29-year-olds have sex an average of 112 times a year, 30-39 year olds around 89 times a year. Blow out that last candle on your 40th birthday cake (if you haven’t passed out with the effort) and your average drops to 69.

No need to be depressed though. The frequency might drop, but the satisfaction levels rise.

Men will be regularly watching porn

Men make up two-thirds of the users of sexually explicitly internet sites and account for 77 per cent of online time.

Most women will have checked out internet porn by their 40s too.

Despite the high level of interest, few people (1 per cent) become addicted. Of those that are though, 30 per cent are married men.

CAT : 3 steps to master Verbal Ability

CAT 2009: 3 steps to master VA
Siddhesh Joglekar

In my last post, I spoke of 3 keys to cracking CAT. One of the keys was 'Learning to love VA'. But how do you go about it? We look at some ways shall be detailing out how to do that in this .

VA for starters is Verbal Ability. In many ways, the word 'ability' is the key here. Abilities don't come within seven days, they have to be acquired over time -- through diligent work and practice. Many students fail to grasp this and try to go the 'rote learning' way for cracking VA (that is sadly the way we have been taught to study in schools and colleges, but that's another matter altogether). So, how can you develop this ability? Here are three simple steps:

More CAT coverage
1. Reading non-fiction
Generally, students love reading fiction -- bestsellers like Kane and Abel (Jeffrey Archer) and The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho) have been long-time favorites. However, the passages that actually come in CAT are rarely from fiction-related masterpieces. For improving comprehension and reading speed, ideally one has to read passages of a similar genre to those coming in past CAT papers. Hence, it is important to read non-fiction. Reading opinions, analyses, even biographies is critical for developing a knack for comprehending non-fiction passages. Another possible way of approaching this issue is forming groups to study -- the group meets twice a week and discusses one aspect of literature of this genre.

2. Practicing vocabulary questions
Other questions in CAT apart from comprehension passages need to be tackled differently. I would highly recommend dividing this part into subsections -- such as pure grammar, sentence correction etc. Once this classification is done, catch hold of one particular subtype and do extensive problem solving. While doing so, continuously taking notes would help in referring to problem areas.

One good avenue for practice I found was solving questions from GMAT guides. From the many mock examinations you may take during the next six months, it would be critical to learn from your mistakes and ideally avoiding the same mistake. Remember that the vocabulary section is a low-time-investment and high-returns section. In many cases, the vocabulary section makes the difference between a good score and a great score, so paying adequate attention to it is paramount.

3. Increasing pace of reading
In many cases, people good at comprehension suffer when it comes to reading the passage quickly. For passages coming in CAT, one has to be a quick reader. For this, I would recommend reading similar length passages, coming in newspapers, magazines etc. Target a step-by-step increase in reading speed. For example, if you require 10 minutes for reading a 500-word article, try to read a similar length in say nine-and-a-half minutes. Note that reducing time for reading should not reduce your comprehension level. Balancing comprehension and speed is tough, but I guess that is where your managerial skills are tested by the examiners.

This is a summary of what 'needs' to be done. Why I haven't gone into specifics is because I believe specifics will differ from person to person. Example, in my case, I could not tackle the central idea-type questions in the comprehension passages. So, I went for writing summaries of articles I could read and asked my study group to comment on the same.

As an aspirant, one has to be smart enough to identify your individual strengths and weaknesses. Working on your weaknesses definitely needs to be top priority, but the strengths should be further worked on as well.

As a final note, the importance of VA in CAT can be seen by the marks distribution in CAT 2008 -- QA and DI/LR were 100 marks each while VA was 160 marks. If there is one section that can make or break your attempt it's VA according to me. So go for it folks, study hard and study smart!

8 Bizarre Sex Tips

8 Bizarre Sex Tips
By Jasmine Leigh

1- Bite her
It might sound vicious, but in fact biting is quite sexy and one of the most exciting of our eight bizarre sex tips when done correctly. You are not going to chew or take out chunks of flesh. What you are going to do, however, is much more subtle: Open your mouth on a shoulder, buttock or other fleshy area (her side or thighs) and attempt to close your jaw by applying gentle pressure. Your teeth should never join in the middle, and pinching the skin with the teeth is not what you are after. Don’t overdo it -- a few well-timed bites show your passion. A good example is if you are taking her from behind, and when you climax, bite her back or shoulder.
2- Oil up
Using oil as a medium for your sexual artwork is not new, but it is often underutilized. Oil provides a slick surface for your sex play, and sometimes more is better. The oil should be vegetable-based and smell good. Ylang ylang essential oil is a relaxant and aphrodisiac. The oil should be smooth, like an almond-based oil. Grab a shower curtain or other oil-proof covering, oil yourselves up and slip-slide your way to orgasm.
3- Use hot and cold
Temperature changes stimulate and excite nerves. When outside influences stay the same, your nerves relax and can become desensitized -- they know what’s coming, nothing is changing, so they go to low power. If you stimulate the nerves by changing temperature, they stay awake and, therefore, increase the power of your sexual play. You can use a variety of substances, like hot chocolate, a cool glass of wine or an ice cube. Be careful not to make the experience uncomfortable. Until you get the hang of it, ask for feedback. Use for oral sex or invent your own games.
4- Suck her feet
Some people hate feet or hate their own feet being touched. However, having your foot licked and sucked on is one of the most sensual of the bizarre sex tips. In between the toes and the arch of the foot are the most sensitive areas of the foot. Get her to do it to you, so you know exactly how it feels. Clean, trimmed feet are crucial to this bizarre sex tip’s success. Also, sucking is best done slowly. Be aware of after-shower feet -- soap doesn’t taste good.

5- Spank her
Spanking comes in line with biting, but is more pronounced and does hurt; however, it is a scientifically proven fact that buttock spanking while aroused tricks the body into translating the smack as pleasure and provides a rush of blood to the area. Slightly cup your hand, but keep it loose and give the area of the buttock furthest away from the anus a good thwack. You want to get that good slap sound and a good palm-butt connection. Don’t overdo it, porn star.
6- Rub her bum
Make sure she knows you are not going to try to insert a finger (or other object including tongue) into her anus. One method is while she is straddling you, reach around and slide your wet finger up and down over her anus, but don’t put any pressure on it. The same goes while performing oral sex on her. Let her do the same to you. Make sure you are very clean before you start -- some surprises are not hot.
7- Eat
Having a sexy picnic in bed is a great way to incorporate food and sex. Stay away from particularly pungent foods (unless you both really like them) as they can be arid on the breath. Stick to fruits and cheese platters, and use your bodies as the plate. Decadence and pleasure will breed more, so take some food to bed and have a sensual few hours enjoying each other’s company.
8- Take her from a right angle
Make no mistake about it: This is a challenge. Think of all the ways you can have sex at a right angle, and try them all. Sex at a right angle can provide some very interestingly bizarre sex positions, and yes, you are going to have to use your imagination. Some suggestions are the "tong" -- she is almost horizontal, holding herself up with one arm with her bottom leg resting on a bed or other low surface. You are standing, holding her legs and penetrating her.
keep it coming
These tips ought to refresh your memory when it comes to creative and sometimes bizarre sex. So the next time you find yourself bored with the missionary position, remember that there's a million ideas that can keep your sex life feeling fresh.

Binge-proof your diet: 6 Foods that keep you full and satisfied

Binge-proof your diet: 6 Foods that keep you full and satisfied
The big, fat (pun intended) irony about trying to drop pounds is that cutting calories has a pesky habit of making you eat more, and more of the wrong types of foods. Think about the last time you nibbled a plain green salad for lunch. How did you feel by 6 pm? Ready to eat an entire anything and then have seconds? Hunger is a real, physical need you can’t overcome with willpower alone. So eat already—and stock up on these foods, which will keep you satiated for hours: Fill up with fiber!

Eggs: They’re a great source of hunger-quelling protein (about 6 g per egg), plus a recent study found that women following a low-fat diet who ate 2 eggs for breakfast at least 5 days a week lost 65% more weight and averaged an 83% greater reduction in waist circumference. Not a fan? Low-fat yogurt is a great source of (breakfast-happy) protein.

Almonds: These tasty nuts contain the healthy monounsaturated fatty acids, good-for-you fats that keep your appetite sated for hours. Studies back this up—one found that after 6 months, dieters whose eating plan included almonds lost 63% more weight, lost 50% more body fat, and shrunk their waistlines 55% more than those on a high-carb diet. They’re not exactly calorie free, so watch portions (1 ounce—or 28 nuts—is about 170 calories).

Avocados: How do I love these? In many many ways, but a few slices with a little lime juice is rich, satisfying, and loaded with so many important nutrients, including those healthy monounsaturated fats, plus vitamins and minerals like potassium and folate. No, they’re not calorie free, but a few slices have between 50 and 75 calories and will make any salad or sandwich SO much more satisfying (you can even throw avocado in a smoothie, which is common in Thai food).

Try these other foods that target fat.

Apples: I’m going to resist the urge to write anything about absentee doctors and regular apple consumption, but needless to say, eating one or two of these crunchy, portable fruits really can benefit your waistline: One study found that subjects who ate one apple before every meal lost 40% more weight than those who didn’t. Plus, they’re low in calories—about 65 for one that’s medium-size.

Oatmeal: This is the food weight loss dreams are made of. It contains high amounts of soluble fiber, which slows digestion and keeps you full for hours, and one study found that subjects who ate oatmeal for breakfast every day and also walked an average of 15 to 30 minutes daily lost about 10 pounds in 12 weeks.

Peanut butter: Despite the name, peanuts are actually a legume, not a nut, but they’re still high in those craving-quashing monounsaturated fats, and research has found that dieters who snack on peanuts or peanut butter lose more weight than those who don’t. My advice is to stick with the natural kind because it’s lower in added sugars—and spread some on those apple slices next time you get the 4 pm munchies.
